Motivation is a pivotal element of getting things done, and when you combine it with discipline, you become practically unstoppable in anything you set out to accomplish. Motivation is what makes you move forward and achieve your goals. It is the way to reach that desire for greatness. However, motivation isn’t the anchor of getting things done. Discipline is. Yet, motivation gets you a long way.
Motivation is what gets you to the gym in the morning before the sun comes up. Motivation helps you climb the job ladder to put food on the table for your family. Motivation to get a set of abs helps you to keep your nutrition on track and avoid those foods that’ll add pounds and inches to your midsection.
And the good news is…
At the end of the day, you have more control over how motivated you are than you likely give yourself credit for. But the problem is, very few men know how to create motivation. Few create scenarios where they can’t help but be motivated. Most sit and wait. But you can’t do that if you want to keep your motivation high.
See, men can do great things when they’re motivated, but the modern man is so rarely motivated that it almost seems like a small fraction of us are reaching our full potential. That’s why in this article, I’m going to show you how to fix low motivation so you can dominate any task you set out to do, reach your full potential, and become the man you were destined to be.
Positivity is a choice. Greek philosophers, Biblical writers, and inspiring leaders throughout history have supported that view. But it’s not something that just happens to you. Learning how to have a positive perspective is a skill that needs to be learned and practiced, not inherited. Here are some ways to do that:
First, spend time in the morning actively thinking about things you’re thankful for. It could be something as simple as the fact that you’re alive and breathing, or you have your spouse in bed next to you. Basically, it’s anything you can think of that kicks those “positivity juices” into high gear at the beginning of each day.
At the end of each day, write down 3 things you appreciate that happened within the last 24 hours. By this time, you’ll hopefully have plenty of positive things to reflect on that happened throughout the day. Even if you have a tough day and you don’t think much good came out of it — then make good come out of it. Write down lessons you learned from a challenging situation or how something difficult will make you a better man. You can add simple things here, too, like having dinner with your wife, making your kids laugh, or enjoying a walk with the dog.
Focusing on these 3 wins throughout the day will help you to stay motivated because the act of training your brain to find opportunities will also create discipline. While most people dwell on despair, all the great men throughout history actively find positivity amidst crisis.
Plan your day, week, year.
Being motivated is more about habit than emotion. In The Power of Full Engagement, Tony Schwarz and Jim Loehr dive into how our brains can be programmed to create motivation and energy.
When we do something over and over again, we start to form a habit. For example, we can become programmed to ‘get up’ and ready to do whatever task is in front of us. It’s like waking up at the same time every day. First, we need an alarm. After a week or so, we begin to wake up at (or earlier) than the time we once set our alarm to rise. As a result, you have an easier time waking up when you need to.
In the same way, you need to set a “motivation alarm.”
For example, if you’re trying to get in better shape, when you take a bathroom break, get into a “pee then push-ups” routine. After you pee, do 5 pushups. Of course, wash your hands afterwards. When you do this, you stay on track towards your goals, prove yourself to be disciplined, and boost motivation throughout the day. Another way to boost motivation is when you accomplish something, do a fist bump in the air, or verbally tell yourself you did a “good job.” Planning out little ways to keep motivation on track each day will add up over the weeks, months, and years so that you STAY motivated — which most people struggle to do.
Get 8 hours of sleep.
Being sleep-deprived is actually like being drunk. We perform at about the same level and it affects the same part of the brain. It increases the risk of a stroke, obesity, diabetes, loss of memory, and more health concerns. I used to side with Arnold Schwarzennegger and say that getting 8-hours of sleep per night was a bunch of rubbish, and that sleeping less will help you get more done. But as I’ve taken on more business ventures myself, and have spent hours in study on sleep, the research is undeniable — you’ll be a more productive and driven man the better you sleep.
Plus, sleeping 8 hours per night is great for your testosterone as it rises during REM sleep, the deep, restorative sleep that occurs mostly late in the nightly sleep cycle.
According to a sleep study from the University of Chicago, testosterone levels can increase up to 500-700 ng/dl (healthy) if you get enough sleep. However that number dips by 15% for every hour you lose.
The reason that’s important for motivation is because having optimal testosterone plays a key role in your motivation and allows men to stay motivated for longer periods of time. Without high testosterone levels, you’ll be physiologically less motivated.
Maintain a high physical condition.
An important part of motivation has to do with how you perceive yourself. When you feel healthy, it’s easier to get and stay motivated for longer periods of time. You can think of motivation like the “caboose” attached to your train of health. Motivation doesn’t drive the train, but it is a result of keeping your body in good enough condition to be able to perform at high levels.
If you don’t workout and if you don’t eat right, it’s going to limit how effective you are in other areas of your life. The reason is that allowing yourself to accept negative habits makes you less confident, which then plummets motivation.
For example, let’s say you think you might want to try intermittent fasting to lose some belly fat. You might think thoughts like, “I can’t realistically do intermittent fasting. I can’t even keep from eating sweets at night.” But if you get into the habit of something as simple as not eating sweets, you’ll have more confidence to act on your motivation to try intermittent fasting. Make sense?
Getting in shape and making the right choices for your health on a daily basis will boost both discipline and motivation at the same time.
